My art school journey is ending …

Four years ago, I did something a little unexpected – I enrolled in a degree in Art and Design Practice. The twist? I was 58 at the time.

While many people my age were thinking about slowing down, I was gearing up – sketchbooks under one arm, clay under my fingernails, and absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into. And honestly? It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

A World of Creative Discovery

From day one, I threw myself into every creative opportunity going. Papermaking, etching, painting, ceramics, bookmaking… you name it, I’ve had a go at it! Each new medium opened up a different way to think, to see, and to express myself. Some techniques challenged me, some surprised me, and all of them taught me something.

There’s something incredibly joyful about learning without pressure – just pure curiosity and play. I’ve had inky hands, clay-covered clothes, and a heart full of creative excitement more times than I can count.

The Power of Community

One of the true highlights of this journey has been the people. I’ve been surrounded by fellow mature students – each of us bringing our own stories, perspectives, and talents to the table.

There’s a special kind of bravery in returning to education later in life, and I’ve been so inspired by the incredible people I’ve met along the way. We’ve shared materials, critiques, creative breakthroughs, and the occasional wobble. We’ve laughed, we’ve supported each other, and we’ve grown together.

That sense of community and mutual respect has been a gift – and something I’ll always carry with me.

So, What’s Next?

As I approach graduation, I’m feeling all the feelings – pride, excitement, a healthy dose of nerves – but mostly, pure joy. Because this isn’t the end of the road. It’s the beginning of something new.

I’m stepping out into the world now as a creative practitioner, ready to explore, to make, and to keep learning. My work might be messy. It might change direction a hundred times. But it will be authentic, full of heart, and deeply rooted in everything I’ve experienced over the last four years.

Just Getting Started

At 62, I’m just getting started. I’ve got ideas buzzing, tools ready, and a head full of creative curiosity. I don’t know exactly where this path will lead – but I know it’s going to be one heck of an adventure.

Thank you for following along. I can’t wait to share more of this journey with you.
